In 1997, at age 16, Kournikova toppled some of the world champs at Wimbledon and reached the semi-finals becoming the second woman in the open era, after Chris Evert, to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in her debut.
She also achieved even greater success playing doubles, where she was at times number one in the world. With Martina Hingis as her partner, she won Grand Slam titles in Australia and won the WTA Championships.
Sadly, Kournikova was forced to retire from professional tennis in 2003 due to serious back and spinal injuries. Two decades later and it’s clear that family has become the priority for the former tennis star.
