As our streets empty, two sounds dominate - church bells and birdsong. It means entertaining creatures which are always around us come to the fore.

We are waking up - in every sense - to the delight of our country's birds. The top ten are easy to see from our windows and gardens and remind us, with their subtle colours and quirky mannerisms, that we should cherish them.

They have taken one hell of a battering in the last 40 years. But they still remain number one in our gardens and will swoop for morsels of bread in city centres.

Known in Liverpool as a 'brown budgie', the house sparrow remains the most common species. Since 1979, when the RSPB began its Big Garden Birdwatch, its numbers have declined by an alarming 53 per cent.
