There was a large tailbacks going anti-clockwise on the motorway near Junction 8 for Carrington at around 8pm on Sunday evening.
North West Motorway Police said they were dealing with a 'serious' road traffic collision. All lanes were blocked and traffic held.But while most drivers waited and gave the emergency services space to deal with the incident, some showed a shocking lack of consideration.
Police patrols tweeted this morning that 15 motorists 'thought it was OK to drive along the hard shoulder past the patient motorists'.
