Get the stories that matter to you sent straight to your inbox with our daily newsletter.A wind-battered monument for workers killed in Johnstone mining disasters has been given a new lease of life by a schoolteacher.The commemorative cairn sits in what is known as the Wee Wood at the junction of Quarrelton Road and Beith Road.It boasts a plaque remembering 13 miners who lost their lives in two local pit accidents - one in 1818 and another in 1860.It is a well-known landmark to residents but had become dilapidated over time and was in desperate need of a facelift.After seeing a post on the Johnstone History Facebook page, ward councillor Andy Steel set about to see if he could organise getting it repaired or replaced.The SNP councillor.
