An SNP MP has apologised for flouting the current ScotRail booze ban on a Glasgow service. Video footage emerged which appears to show Mhairi Black, representative for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, drinking from a can - supposedly of lager. It is understood the politician had been travelling from Glasgow Central last night after a football match between Ayr United and Partick Thistle.

In the video, first reported by The Spectator, the MP is surrounded by other rail passengers donned in red and yellow. She can be seen taking a swig from the tin as other passengers are captured chanting. It is currently prohibited to consume alcohol on a ScotRail service. The rule had been put in place as a "temporary measure" to prevent transmission of Covid-19 in November 2020.However, the booze ban rule was extended for 17 months when ministers took the helm of the rail operator on April 1.It means passengers are currently unable to bring their own alcoholic drinks on trains or purchase them from staff.

Additionally, the MP is also without a mask in the clip while officials continue to recommend the use of face coverings during Covid-19.

An SNP spokesperson said: "Mhairi has been reminded of the rules and apologises." Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here.
