She was tiny and very well spoken. But even at our first meeting in December 1981 I could sense the steel behind the delicate frame.

When she looked at you, it was at you, never a glance. She was 46-years-old at the time and Miss Yvonne Myfanwy Evans was in her prime.

Eight years earlier she had become the first woman editor of a newspaper in the UK, which rightly warranted her being interviewed on Radio 4.

She achieved this through skill, flair, guile, and devotion to her craft in a tough, male dominated industry. Our meeting came about only after I had received 58 rejections from newspapers around the country.
