She told the BBC : "I had lost the feeling in my arms and legs. They had cut away some of my lung. "I had a tracheostomy. I couldn't speak for four and a bit months, which was hard for me as I love to talk." Mekala was in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary from November to March and was able to see her family and friends whenever she wanted.

But when lockdown hit, she said  being in isolation "negatively impacted" her recovery. She said: "My recovery has been very hard.
