Ricky Valance, a singer best known for his controversial song “Tell Laura I Love Her,” has died at the age of 84.
The song, which went to number one on the UK Singles Chart, was about a boy named Tommy who died in an accident and professed his love for a girl named Laura before he passed away.
The BBC briefly banned the song because of the controversy surrounding the song at the time, but its popularity led to the station reversing the ban, according to Deadline. Ricky, who performed into his 70s, passed away after a long battle with dementia.
He had been hospitalized since March, his agent confirmed. We’re sending our thoughts and condolences to Ricky‘s loved ones during this difficult time.
