Real Military Wives behind the new film tell of loss and loneliness that gave birth to the choir

WHEN Britain’s service personnel went off to fight in Afghanistan, their loved ones waited anxiously for phone calls, live webchats or old-fashioned letters in “bluey” envelopes from the war zone, not knowing if they would return home.

Faced with this unbearable stress, ten years ago a group of women vowed to support each other through song – and the first Military Wives choir was formed, on the Catterick Army base in North Yorks.

It was quickly followed by more choral groups at two Devon barracks, in Chivenor and Plymouth, which were later documented by  Gareth Malone’s reality TV show The Choir: Military Wives in 2011.
