Pregnant women to be offered first ever test to detect pre-eclampsia

NHS after being given the green light by regulators. Until now, tests have only been available to rule out the dangerous pregnancy condition, rather than diagnose it.

But yesterday the NHS watchdog NICE released draft guidance recommending four new tests to spot pre-eclampsia in its early stages.

NICE says the tests can be used from 20 weeks to 36 weeks and six days, with the hopes hoping they will pick up the condition early before it becomes more dangerous.

It can lead to serious complications for both mother and baby if not monitored or treated and contributes to the deaths of around 1,000 babies a year in the UK.
