Powerlifter Catherine Gordon breaks records as she takes Western European title

Powerlifter Catherine Gordon says it was a proud moment as she set three Scottish and British records on her way to medal glory with Great Britain at the 2022 Western European Championships in France.Gordon, 49, from Bargeddie, won the under-76kg class in Aulnat, France, and helped the team to silver as well.She also overcame a few obstacles on her way to glory at the tournament, but insists that just makes it all the more special.Catherine said: “I set three Scottish records and three British records.“I squatted 170kg, benched 107.5kg – so those were British and Scottish records – and a total of 447kg.“I dead-lifted 170kg, which was just short of my personal best, but I was knackered by that point!“I’m really proud of myself, because there was a lot of build-up to the event itself.

Training was particularly difficult, there were challenges which I overcame.“But to do what I did on the day was really massive, so I’m really proud of myself.”Catherine added: “I’m on the GB team, it’s a new team that I’ve been invited onto, so I’m currently in two teams – Masters and Open.“It was a successful competition for me but even being at the Western Europeans is a massive achievement, because it’s a big deal and a lot of pressure.“It’s more of a team event this time, instead of an individual one.“The Great Britain ladies’ team won silver, which I was part of, and I won my class as well, so I’m really proud.“There were three ladies representing GB and we all won our class, so that was amazing and it was a brilliant opportunity.”Catherine should now be competing at the World Masters Championships in Canada next month but revealed she has a financial barrier in her way.She said: “I should be representing Great Britain in Canada in
