A man being treated in hospital who set his bed on fire by smoking while wearing an oxygen mask has been jailed.Almost £50,000 worth of damage was caused after Lee Williams, 44, decided to light up a cigarette.He had already been repeatedly warned by nurses after being found smoking in his hospital bed during his two-week stay.Several people had to be evacuated from the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

A ward was forced to close for a fortnight following the incident.At Cardiff Crown Court, Williams admitted assaulting an emergency worker and arson with intent to endanger life.The court heard that in May 2019, Williams was an inpatient at the hospital and that for his treatment he needed oxygen.Andrew Kendall, for the Crown.
