The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will scale back the number of new members admitted to the film Academy this year by about half, after having surpassed its diversity goals to more than double the number of women and people of color who vote on the Oscars.

Back in 2016, at the height of #OscarsSoWhite, the Academy made aggressive strides toward diversity and grew its membership from 6,300 Oscar voters in 2016 to 9,300 this year (or over 10,000, if you include non-voting members).

Specifically, the Academy invited 683 new members in 2016, 774 in 2017, 928 in 2018, 842 in 2019 and 819 in 2020. However, continuing that pace of about 10% new members each year is not sustainable, so 2021’s new membership class will be about half.
