The government is facing calls to introduce tougher sentences in court for attacks on store staff after a shocking report revealed more than 50,000 incidents of violence at Britain's local shops in 12 months.

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) said shops were £211 million out of pocket as a direct result of crime over the last year.

And, chillingly, the industry body reported an increase in assaults on staff involving acid and knives. Timperley village in Trafford was sealed off on Sunday after thieves bungled a bid to blow up and steal a cash machine at a Co-op store.
