exam results marked down by a grade or more. The level of controversial downgrading at Greenwood Academy in North Ayrshire emerged in a council table seen by the Daily Record.

The system overseen by the Scottish Qualifications Authority has been severely criticised for appearing to judge pupils on their school's past performance.

It is claimed the method penalises pupils from more disadvantaged parts of Scotland. Results in areas of North Ayrshire with greater deprivation were more likely to be downgraded than in more affluent areas.The First Minister's old school, in Dreghorn, reported 37 per cent of final results were moderated down by one grade from original teachers' estimates.
