Cristiano Ronaldo has been dealt a major blow in his hopes of making next year’s World Cup after Portugal were handed the worst possible draw in the play-offs.
The Manchester United star and his fellow countrymen missed out on automatic qualification for the 2022 tournament after suffering a 2-1 defeat in their final group game against Serbia earlier this month.
They’ll now have to go through the play-offs if they’re to make it to Qatar next year, but they’ll have to overcome a massive hurdle to make it.
Portugal have been drawn in the same pathway as Euro 2020 champions Italy, meaning one of the two sides won’t make it to the World Cup in a major upset.
