United have been talking to parent club Shanghai Shenhua for most of May in an attempt to come to an arrangement for the 30-year-old.
The initial deal kept him at Old Trafford until the end of the 2019/20 season - but the season hiatus has put paid to that. And, unsurprisingly, Shanghai Shenhua wanted their striker back ready for the start of the Chinese Super League in the next few weeks.
