Yet Patrick Savage is taking the challenge in his stride - just 15 months after being diagnosed with advanced cancer. After the Manchester Evening News revealed he planned to walk from London to Manchester to boost funds for the The Christie Hospital Charity and Cancer Research UK he has received huge backing from sponsors.

He and a group of friends set off from his campus at the London School of Economics on Tuesday this week and expect to arrive at The Christie on June 29, doing 30 to 35 miles a day.
