A journalist who is accusing Johnny Depp‘s Jeanne du Barry director Maiwenn of spitting on him is speaking out about the encounter.

Last month Edwy Plenel filed a lawsuit accusing the director and star of Johnny‘s big comeback movie of assault.

She reportedly spat on his face while he was at a restaurant, a fact that Maiwenn has seemingly confirmed herself in an interview. Edwy issued his first interview about the encounter, explaining why he thinks it happened and his decision to file a lawsuit. Read more about the alleged encounter… Speaking to Variety, the journalist referred to Maiwenn as being “outspokenly anti-#MeToo.” This was partly in reference to an interview Maiwenn gave where she said that she did indeed assault Edwy. “I’ll speak about it when I’m ready,” she said at the time, adding that she was “very anxious about the release of my film.” Edwy hypothesized that the incident occurred as a way for the director to respond to a report his publication Mediapart published about Maiwenn‘s former husband Luc Besson, who was accused of rape and sexual assault.

The report included contents of an interview she had with the police about her ex. “When she talked to the police, she discussed complicated aspects of her relationship with Luc Besson, notably during their separation,” he explained. “But once we published our piece, we never received any protest of any kind.
