One day during a lecture, I thought I had a stomach ache and decided to leave early. I tried to rest since I knew I’d be going back to work that same night, but my water broke in my sleep.

I’m grateful that my daughter was born healthy, but at 36 weeks she was preterm—I can’t help but think that my rigorous schedule contributed to my preterm delivery.

Because of the disparities in health outcomes, I also wonder if there is something to me being a Black woman that contributed to this as well—an extra burden haunting Black women during and after delivery.People often ask me.
