SCHOOL classrooms can often be a place where innocent love notes are swapped and pupils share longing looks. But when the attraction is between a teacher and their student, it can become far more sinister.

New Channel 5 drama The Teacher follows Jenna Garvey – played by Sheridan Smith, 40 – who is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student Kyle Hope, played by Samuel Bottomley.

But how does a real teacher-pupil relationship affect the victim in later life? Ryan Adam* had just turned 16 when he was abused by his English teacher, who was more than twice his age.

It was only when he grew older that he realised the full impact of this on his life. Now 36, the building worker and dad-of-two, from Swindon, shares his story.
