Plans to dramatically expand Manchester city centre northwards towards Collyhurst have taken a major step forward after the government approved £50m in funding.
Much of the work on the Northern Gateway project - which would see 15,000 homes built along the Irk Valley over the next two decades - had been hinging on the cash, which was confirmed in Wednesday’s Budget .
The £51.6m share of the national ‘housing infrastructure fund’ will allow the partnership behind the plans, Manchester council and development giant Far East Consortium, to unlock around a third of those homes.
It will pay for the land to be cleaned up for development as well as to build a new access road, cycle lanes and walking routes.
