Government tells people avoiding ibuprofen when treating coronavirus is the 'sensible thing' amid uncertainty

The government's chief science officer has urged people to avoid ibuprofen to treat coronavirus. The comments from Sir Patrick Vallance were made today as he updated MPs on the UK's approach to tackling the disease.

And it comes a day after we revealed warnings were already being issued about the drug after reports it was worsening the side effects.

Vallance, the UK’s Chief Scientific Advisor, told MPs that - amid some uncertainty about its impact - the sensible thing at the moment would be to avoid ibuprofen in cases of people who have coronavirus.

He urged people to take something else such as paracetamol instead. His comments, in answer to a question at a parliamentary committee, come after experts criticised Britain’s NHS advice that
