Nearly £22million has been paid by Glaswegians in bus lane fines since they were introduced just over seven-and-a-half years ago.

Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request show Glasgow City Council raked in a total of £21,750,293 from April 2012 to December last year.

In that time period 894,505 notices were handed out to drivers across Scotland's largest city . People who illegally drive in bus lanes are issued with a £60 fine, however it's reduced when payment is made within 14 days of issue.

The local authority also revealed 170,574 appeals were lodged with 35,193 cancelled, reports Glasgow Live . Bus lane enforcement uses a digital camera system that records vehicles illegally making use of the city's bus lanes.
