Enid Blyton’s books called out for links to ‘racism and xenophobia’

After delighting young readers with tales of ginger beer and buns for nearly a century, a ‘re-appraisal’ of the work of Enid Blyton has seen the English Heritage link it to ‘racism and xenophobia’.

Blyton’s books have been among the world’s best-sellers since the 1920s and have been accused of being racist in the past, even during Enid’s lifetime.

In the updated Blue Plaque information, produced by the charity English Heritage, it says: ‘Blyton’s work has been criticised during her lifetime and after for its racism, xenophobia and lack of literary merit. ‘In 2016, Blyton was rejected by the Royal Mint for commemoration on a 50p coin because, the advisory committee minutes record, she was “a racist, sexist, homophobe and not a very
