The East Lancashire Railway was targeted by heartless thieves who stole up to £10,000 worth of equipment - on the very same day the railway was thrown into 'financial crisis' because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Bury heritage attraction and registered charity announced that it would be closing for the foreseeable future on Friday, March 20, as social distancing rules come into force.
The move 'threatened the railway's continued existence' and staff put out an urgent plea to the public, launching a fundraiser to help ensure its survival after the coronavirus shutdown.
But just hours later, thieves stole £10,000 worth of brass and copper fittings from the tracks some time on Friday night, say train bosses.
