Their larvae nestle in sphagnum moss, a reliable food source and a place to hide from predators. And when the rare, white-faced darter dragonfly finally emerges and spreads its wings it needs scrub and woodland to roost.

In the UK it is scarce as 95 per cent of lowland peat bogs have been destroyed. The species has red and black markings and a white patch on its head.

The nearest population of it to Greater Manchester is Cheshire's Delamere Forest. Now It is hoped a £670,000 grant will help entice it to moss lands where the boroughs of Salford and Wigan merge.
