Next up, we're speaking to Conversations With Friends director, Leanne Welham. Before breaking into the industry, Leanne Welham helped others retell their stories… kind of.

Unable to get into film school, the budding filmmaker worked for a company that would edit home movies from VHS to a DVD montage.

As she puts it, this “normally involved a Coldplay song in the background” and a overmarked price tag by the company owner. In exchange for hours slogging through other people’s memories, Leanne was given access to recording equipment she used to make short movies, and it’s through this she finally got her foot in the door.

Consciously or not, Leanne has always placed female stories at the centre of her creative work. Her first major breakthrough, 2017’s Pili, told the story of a single mother living with HIV in Tanzania.
