Alfredo Morelos' Rangers ban explained as rare double jeopardy ruling brings two game suspension

Alfredo Morelos was facing a two-game ban for a flashpoint at Tannadice on Sunday surprised many fans. The striker caught Dundee United's Mark Connolly with an arm during his side's 2-1 win, with pundits agreeing he should have been shown a red.

Referee Steven MacLean booked Morelos though, and in the normal course of events that would mean he could not face a ban. On Tuesday though the SFA offered a two-match suspension for El Bufalo which Rangers accepted.

So why has Morelos been banned for an incident that was already dealt with by the match referee? It all comes down to two rules of the SFA 's Judicial Panel protocol.
