8th annual Simon Nkoli Memorial Lecture to ask ‘why solidarity?’

The 8th edition of the Simon Nkoli Collective’s Simon Nkoli Memorial Lecture (SNML) takes place on 26 November in Pretoria and online.

It’s a space that has been central in preserving and building on the legacy of South African anti-Apartheid struggle icon and pioneer of the gay rights movement. Simon Tseko Nkoli was born in Sebokeng on 26 November 1957.

Nkoli’s life had always been affected by the Apartheid state, positioning him at the centre of identity politics in South Africa.

Nkoli developed an innate understanding of the injustices faced by black and gay South Africans under laws enforced by an unfair system, which influenced his activism and located it at the intersection of race, class and sexuality in South Africa.
