It's an experience on many people's bucket lists - but with travel out of the question for the foreseeable future, it's unlikely any of us will get to see the northern lights for a while.

One of the world's most spectacular natural wonders, the aurora borealis are occasionally visible over the UK but are most often seen in the northern tips of Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia and Russia.

The dazzling display occurs when electrically-charged particles from the sun cross into the Earth’s atmosphere where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules, emitting light.

Seen near the magnetic poles, the same phenomenon also occurs in the southern hemisphere, where it's known as the aurora australis, or southern lights.
