The public is being urged to join in a national sing-along as the country marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day. On May 8 1945, the Second World War in Europe was declared officially over.
Ever since, VE Day - which stands for Victory in Europe - marks the day of the formal acceptance by the Allies of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces.
It was the day people had been waiting for after the war officially began on September 1, 1939 and almost six years around 50,000 celebrated as the Germans surrendered to the Allies.
The then Prime Minister Winston Churchill told the nation at 3pm that day that the war was over. And that victory speech will be heard once more at 3pm today before Dame Vera Lynn’s wartime classic,
