Firefighters have been battling a blaze 'the size of three football pitches' in woodland in Salford. Firefighters were called to Chat Moss at midday yesterday near Twelve Yards Road in Irlam, where they spent hours tackling a blaze.

The fire was spreading quickly underground through the peat in the soil and had been smouldering a day by the time fire crews arrived, according to firefighters who attended the incident.

The firefighters are at the scene again today as they continue to dampen the area and stop the fire spreading further. Bury Fire Station Watch Manager Steve Urmston told the Manchester Evening News : "We were there from around 12pm to 7pm.
