The family of a 'hero' dad who died trying to save a group of children from a riptide have paid a loving tribute to him. Hywel Morgan died in a tragic accident at a Ceredigion beach on June 10, police said.

An air ambulance was called to Poppit Sands in St Dogmaels, Wales, at around 8.40pm following reports that a number of people had been caught in a riptide at the beach.

It is understood Hywel, who was known affectionately as Hyw by family and friends, had tried to rescue a group of children who had got into difficulty in the water.

The 47-year-old died after being recovered from the sea. Despite their best efforts, paramedics were unable to save him.
