Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE (born 1 August 1965) is an English film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicals Cabaret (1994), Oliver! (1994), Company (1995), and Gypsy (2003). He directed an original West End stage musical for the first time with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2013).
For directing the play The Ferryman, Mendes was awarded the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play in 2019.

msn.comEmpire of Light, a new production written and directed by Sam Mendes. The film is set at Dreamland and follows a love story that takes place in an English coastal cinema during the 1980's.
Crew members have in the past transformed the famous Dreamland cinema as part of the production, with images previously showing snowy scenes.
This production is Sam Mendes' first original solo screenplay, but he has a string of successful directing credits to his name, including the war epic 1917 and James Bond hits Skyfall and Spectre.
Filming began in Thanet in February and is due to continue along the Kent coastline until May.
