SXSW Hands Out Film Awards, Despite Festival Cancellation

Cypress Hill have revealed that the album they release after their next will be their “final traditional” LP.The California hip-hop titans – comprising B-Real, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs and Eric Bobo – are gearing up to release their 10th studio album, ‘Back In Black’, which is set to arrive on March 18. But even with the pending release, the group are already looking ahead to the future.“The next album after this one will be the final traditional Cypress Hill album,” B-Real told The Independent.

The 2020 South by Southwest Film Festival was set to be a career-making moment for many creators, and a particularly bright spotlight for women, as 70% of the films in competition were directed or co-directed by female filmmakers. 

South by Southwest, the sprawling Austin, Texas, conference and festival, was one of the first major gatherings canceled by the coronavirus pandemic. But its organizers, eager to lend a hand to the movies that had been set to premiere at SXSW, on Tuesday went ahead with the festival’s film awards.

The SXSW festival unveiled its list of film competition winners Tuesday, which took place digitally over the past week after the festival was canceled by the City of Austin to prevent further outbreak of the new coronavirus. The 10-day festival was canceled just a week out from its start, causing organizers to scramble to salvage its film competition.

The SXSW Festival is making its film competition digital after the Austin festival, due to kick off on Friday, was canceled over health risks pertaining to the coronavirus Festival organizers said Friday that the juried awards scheduled for this year's festival will still take place, with jury members viewing submissions via links. All the feature films selected for SXSW this year are eligible for the Independent Spirit Awards next year, while the winners of the animated, documentary and narrative short film categories are eligible for Oscars next year.

The canceled SXSW Film Festival will still hand out awards by allowing jurors to see the festival’s competition films.
