News of Nichelle Nichols passing came via her Facebook page via a message posted by her son, Kyle Johnson. He shared a heartfelt note about his mother's passing and asked fans to respect their privacy during this time: As Lieutenant Uhura, the actress broke barriers as one of the first Black women featured in a major television series.
After the series cancellation, she went on to reprise her role in the animated series and starred alongside William Shatner and others in six Trek movies (Paramount+ subscribers can check out most of her work as Uhura there).
