A dad who suffered a cardiac arrest on a beach was kept alive by surfers until an ambulance arrived. Father-of-three Bill Shackman, 48, was surfing in the water at East Sands in St Andrews, Fife on December 8 2020.
When Bill, an academic writer, came out of the water his heart stopped and he collapsed. Two surfers both trained in CPR rushed to his aid and kept his heart going for around 15 minutes until an ambulance arrived.
An air ambulance was summoned but Bill was taken by road ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Former army officer Scott Mitchell and retired firefighter Lewis Hamilton took it in turns to keep Bill's heart going until the ambulance arrived.
