Amazon has officially ordered a sequel show for Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner 2049.
Variety confirmed the news and that the title will be Blade Runner 2099. There’s speculation that it will be set 50 years after the events that took place in the prior movie, which was released in 2017 and starred the likes of Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto.
The movie claimed the top spot at the box office upon release. It was based on the 1982 film Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford.
The movie achieved cult status over the years. Ridley will executive produce the new series alongside showrunner Silka Luisa, Michael Green and others. “The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios, told Variety.
