A sexually transmitted disease which can cause genitals to rot and decay with flesh-eating ulcers is on the rise in the UK. Usually found in far-flung tropical countries, Donovanosis was first recorded in the UK in 2018 but now cases of the rare STI are steadily growing.
The nasty bug, also known as klebsiella granulomatis, causes foul-smelling genital ulcers to grow and spread and can result in the groin eating itself if left untreated.
It's usually found in places such as India, Brazil and New Guinea, but latest figures show that cases were n the rise even before the outbreak of Covid-19.Total reported instances across the country swelled from 19 in 2016 to 30 in 2019.
