And while those old banknotes may no longer be legal tender across Scotland or the rest of the UK, you may still be able to swap them for real cash - especially if you have Bank of England notes or old pound coins.

Paper banknotes were phased out in favour of polymer ones as they offer better security features, as well as being more longer-lasting.

A recent Freedom of Information request by BBC Wales discovered that the Bank of England has more than £28billion in old £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes that have not been cashed in, reports Express.co.uk.
