Ross ‘The Boss’ Montgomery admits he Is disappointed there was no “fairytale” first season in the PDC as the East Kilbride thrower prepares to watch the World Darts Championships from the sofa this Christmas. The 60-year-old has endured a steep learning curve after making the step-up from the amateur circuit to the professional ranks in January, when he earned his playing privileges for at least two years. And he has fallen well short of qualifying for the biggest event on the calendar at Alexandra Palace in London, which gets underway today, after finishing 130th in the rankings. It hasn’t been all bad for Montgomery, who stunned world number one Gerwyn Price with a 6-5 win at the ‘Players’ Championship 23’ in August. But he admits it was always going to be a tall order to reach the Ally Pally.Montgomery, who qualified for 13 World Championships on the old BDO Tour, said: “I just wasn’t good enough this season.“There was a lot of games I could have won and lost, but there was a lot of games where I was well beaten.“The guys at the top of the tree, if you don’t take your chances they will punish you and that’s what’s been happening.“It would have been a fairytale if I had gotten to the Ally Pally in my first year.

I wasn’t expecting too much but it is still disappointingbecause it would have been great to be involved.“But it is something that I can work towards in 2023.“First and foremost next season, I want to earn enough money to guarantee my card for 2024 and win enough money to get up the rankings.“There are a lot permutations in terms of how you can qualify for the World Championships through different ranking tables, but basically I need to play better, win more money and take it from there.”Dutchman Michael van Gerwen
