after a shock report revealed more than 500,000 people were waiting to be seen. Official statistics released this week showed that as of June 30, a total of 396,771 Scots were waiting to see a specialist for outpatient treatment.

Four in 10 of them had already waited more than 16 weeks. Speaking at the first FMQs after Holyrood returned from its summer recess, Anas Sarwar claimed the figures were a "humiliation" for the SNP and a "tragedy" for patients languishing on ever-lengthening lists.
