Busola Omiyale, from Salford, first noticed her daughter Toriayooluwa was unwell when she was nine-months-old. Toriayooluwa, now aged 16, was diagnosed with sickle cell disease before she was born.
The disorder means red blood cells are not shaped as they should be, usually in the form of crescent moons instead of round disks.
Although Toriayooluwa’s condition was detected before birth, she didn’t experience her first pain symptom – called a ‘crisis’ – until she was a tot.
