Martin King shares heartbreaking first sign of mother’s dementia that went unnoticed

It was 2006 when Martin King noticed a difference in his mother’s demeanour but it wasn’t until 2011 that Christina was diagnosed with dementia.

There were many signs that she was dealing with the debilitating illness, but the King family had no idea that they were correlated to dementia or Alzheimer’s. ‘I wasn’t living with my mum, but a couple of my sisters were still living in the family home.

But what I did notice is that she could go through six or seven names before getting to my name,’ he tells EVOKE as he speaks ahead of the Virtual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk.

Martin was told at the time that ‘wasn’t a sign of Alzheimer’s or dementia’ instead it was simply because she ‘had a busy mind.
