Manchester City were in blistering form as they set a new Champions League record against Sporting Lisbon. Pep Guardiola’s side took one step into the quarter-finals of the competition after just 45 minutes of their last-16 tie against Sporting Lisbon as they took complete control in Portugal.
City ran riot as they took a 4-0 lead inside the opening 45 minutes of the first leg of the tie, with Sporting blown away as the visitors underlined their credentials as favourites for the trophy.
Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring after just seven minutes, with the goal being awarded after a long VAR check, before Bernardo Silva’s thunderous strike double their lead just 10 minutes later.
Phil Foden made it three with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half, and there was still time for Silva to add his second and almost certainly put the tie beyond any doubt as City took a 4-0 lead into the break in Lisbon.
