United’s chances of silverware this season look to be over after they were beaten in the fourth round by Middlesbrough following a penalty shootout at Old Trafford.
Despite the hosts creating numerous chances, they wasted far too many as they were held to a 1-1 draw, with Matt Crooks’ controversial second-half goal cancelling out Jadon Sancho’s strike.
The Championship side then went on to win the shootout 8-7, with Anthony Elanga missing the vital spot-kick after neither goalkeeper had been able to make a save from the previous 15 efforts.
The defeat means United’s only remaining hope of silverware is the Champions League this season – and former Liverpool defender Carragher was quick to remind Keane of his previous comments on Cristiano Ronaldo.
