But progress is finally being made on the planned Mottram Bypass, which will take traffic on the A57 away from the Tameside village.
Highways England are carrying out ground and archaeological investigation works along the route until May, with that work set to help the team prepare the road's final design.
If that is approved through the planning process, Highways England says work could begin on the £228 million road in spring 2023. "I think the general view from the public is that it has been a long time coming," Cllr Jacqueline Owen, Tameside Council
