ON his first day playing Harold Bishop in Neighbours, Ian Smith rang the doorbell of a Ramsay Street house and Kylie Minogue answered – dressed as a clown.

It could not have been a more surreal start for the actor, who spent five years playing her stepfather on the soap, which became as big a hit in the UK as it was in its Aussie homeland.

Now both Ian, 84, and Kylie, 54, are returning to Neighbours to mark the end of the show after 35 years on our screens. The final ever episode will air on Channel 5 on July 29 at 9pm.

Ian’s memories of starting out on the soap together are still vivid. He said: “I just knew this show was going to change my life, and it did.
