ACTRESS Gemma Oaten has opened up about her childhood in psychiatric units as she battled with an eating disorder. The soap star - who has appeared in Emmerdale and Coronation Street - was previously told by doctors that she had 24 hours to live.

Now 37, Gemma has reflected on her early teens as she recalled the "lack of care available" at the time. Sharing a smiling photo of herself, she penned: "This is me on my 13th birthday.

I look happy. Was I? "Before turning 13yrs old. 10yrs old the anorexia took hold." The TV star then told fans that she was turned away by the GP and wasn't assessed until a year later.

She continued: "10 1/2 - turned away by a GP telling me I wasn't low enough in weight to have a problem. "10 3/4 - finally seen by a psychotherapist at de la pole psychiatric unit, asked by a therapist to draw my body and tell her where it was 'fattest' before being asked 'if your parents died in a car crash today, who would you miss the most?' (I was 10 YEARS OLD...!) a question to see if I was being abused apparently...?! (I was NOT being abused!!). "11 1/4 - put on waiting list for CAMHS treatment at westend adolescent unit." .css-qu9fel{border-top:1px solid #dcdddd;}.css-b9nmbi{margin-bottom:16px;border-top:1px solid.
